The vertical I think is probably worth more than a horizontal. As far as small horizontals go, I think the Benchmaster is not at the top of the list because of one big critical flaw. The Benchmaster has no backgear. It will run endmills wonderfully, but it is not going to be very good with plain horizontal cutters. The machine runs too fast.

The Benchmaster has a vertical mill version, which may likely be what the OP wants (most folks in that size category do not want a horizontal mill). The Burke does not, I think, have that option, so as you say, it would need a separate vertical head. The size restraints and small work may suggest the Benchmaster.

This is a nice little Benchmaster MV-1 vertical mill. These little mills are highly sought after since they take up little space. Are a sturdy, very useful machine and made in the USA. I've had this one for over 4 years and it has served me well. It has leadscews on X, Y, and Z and not rack and pinion. There is a little play on the X and Y.
